The Ethiopian Ministry of Culture and Tourism recently announced plans to build a 250 meters (70 floors) high skyscraper to be known as Mesob Tower on 20,000 square metres of land near Mexico Square within 5-6 years.

Once completed it will be one of the tallest towers in Africa.

The building will predominantly be used as a hotel but it is anticipated that the building will also include a shopping mall, cultural center reflecting all regions of the country, gym and golf club. The design will reflect Ethiopian heritage to the world as it is expected to help generate tourism revenue.

The skyscraper design is adapted from the Ethiopian traditional basket known as a Mesob from which people dine together and which signifies unity.

The project is a joint venture between the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and private partnership.  The cost of the project has not yet been revealed.
