Total Ethiopia ran a Total Challenge StartUpper of the Year contest and the winners were awarded at an official ceremony held at the Hyatt Regency in April. The 2018-2019 StartUpper of the Year by Total Challenge, is held simultaneously in 55 countries  — 37 of which are in Africa, 11 in the Asia-Pacific and Middle East region, 4 in the Americas, and 3 in Europe — reaffirming Total’s commitment to social and economic development in host countries worldwide. By helping innovative young entrepreneurs to realize their projects, the Challenge strengthens the local social fabric.

This second StartUpper of the Year by Total Challenge received nearly 50,000 entries, of which more than 15,000 were fully completed. In all, 825 finalists presented their projects to a jury of experts, with 165 winning prizes.


The first prizewinner in each country will see their project presented to the international grand juries that will then pick six Grand Winners from all 55 countries.

The three winners of the year by Total Challenge Ethiopia included:

Egzieryalew Ayele with his Coffee Dryer Machine.

“We manufacture a coffee dryer machine that reduces drying time from 15 days to 10 hours; the machine also increases the quality of coffee which leads to increasing yield”.


Anasimos Gelan from Greenketema Landscaping

“Our company provides an integrated landscaping service, we incur a relatively reduced cost, and provide service with professionally trained gardeners in a consistent and safety-first approach. We also provide a consultancy and supervision service”.


Selam Wondhim from Grohydro Manufacturing

“Grohydro is a pioneer in making urban agriculture a real solution to the problem of scarce resources like land, soil, nutrition, as well as over food scarcity for livestock and humans. We all want a better future so we say Grow More with Less!”


Selam was also the winner of the Top Female Entrepreneur Award a new addition to the Total Challenge this year to support women in business.

These young entrepreneurs will receive financial support for the first prize to develop their project. They will also receive personalized support and coaching and communications campaign to publicize their project.

Total Ethiopia was established in 1950 as a petroleum product distribution company, developed its activities since then and contributed for social & economic development of the country.


Today, the company operates 168 service stations and five depots across the country, of which four are aviation depots, and a Fuels and LPG depot (Dukem depot).  These operations have created more than 1500 jobs directly and indirectly.
